Kankakee Community College's Agri-Hort Technology Program 5 Year Anniversary
The Agriculture and Horticulture Program at Kankakee Community College will celebrate its five year anniversary with an open house from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24. There will be remarks at 5:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend. The event will be on the Riverfront Campus? West Campus area. The event includes student-guided tours of KCC?s greenhouse with aquaponics and hydroponics areas, high tunnel, three-quarter acre farm plot and classrooms/labs. ?The program has evolved over the past five years,? said Katelynn Ohrt, the program director. ?We are celebrating the great things happening in this program, as well as the exciting changes to come. The community, including anyone with an interest in agriculture and/or horticulture, can join us at the celebration to learn more about the Agri-Hort Technology program.? Some of the courses in the Agri-Hort Technology program at KCC include Integrated Pest Management, Plant Science, Soil Science, Plant Propagation, Landscape Plants and Design, Animal Science, Companion Animal Science, Fundamentals of Horticulture, Greenhouse Operations, Engineering Applications, and Fruit and Vegetable Production. Those working toward a degree can choose specializations in areas of business, horticulture, manufacturing technology, and production. Some of KCC?s certificates in Agri-Hort Technology can be completed within five months. More classes can be added to certificates to work toward an associate degree. An agriculture transfer program, which is affiliated with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, also is offered.
